Estimation of the technological civilisation impact on the environment using examples of ecological problems in the NIS

Objective

A European scientific network in the field of ecological research, with a special emphasis on the territory of the NIS, will be organised with regular international co-operation structures such as association and scientific council. The main aim of this network is to establish and develop scientific links between west European ecologists and those from the NIS; between groups of west European scientists who are interested in the investigation of the east European ecological situation and its influence on western Europe; and between research groups in the NIS. These links will help to transfer the most sophisticated ecological research methodology from one part of Europe to another, to join up the eastern and western sources of environmental information, and to develop joint estimation methods for the analysis of important ecological problems.

These functions of the network will be achieved by the following means of co-ordination and structuring: organisation of working circles to identify the most important research direction within the problem area; regular workshops within the circles; joint research in some special fields of mutual interest; financial support to the eastern groups of researchers in different working circles; intensive information and exchange of results between members of the circle; organisation of regular E-mail exchange between circles and within each circle; organisation of two scientific conferences (one in east Europe and one in west Europe) with participation of all members of the network with publication of proceedings; financial support for research staff mobility; and preparation and organisation of joint projects.

The following working circles will be organised: environmental situation in industrial centres; human ecology and risk assessments; environmental modelling and ecological monitoring; and strategies of ecologically sustainable industrial development.
