Catalysts based on co-operating metal centres: early-late D-block transition metal complexes incorporating heterobinucleating ligands

Objective



Improvements to the efficiencies with which chemical reactions can be achieved has an energy reward and means a corresponding reduction in the environmental impact of the process. These savings and rewards can be considerable for the very large-scale reactions utilised by the petroleum industry. Catalysts usually play a key role in lowering the energy required for chemical transformations and thus their improvement is of great interest to the chemicals industry and the development of a clean technology.

The aim of this project is to bring together teams of organic, inorganic, physical and applications chemists in order to produce catalysts with novel features and with potential use in the petroleum industry.

The chemical aims involve the synthesis of special bidentate organophosphorus ligands by organic chemists which will co-ordinate with two or more metal atoms and bring them sufficiently close to establish co-operative reactivity and thus enhance their catalytic properties. Two categories of ligand will be synthesised. The inorganic teams will investigate the co-ordinating potential of the ligands towards a variety of metals and will isolate and purify those which deserve catalytic and physical studies.
