Objective
Many areas of life and technology need multifunctional systems which can be obtained from multifunctional supramolecules. The molecular design and fine organic synthesis of supramolecular devices with a capacity for photoswitching are urgent problems for current research. Photocontrol of the physical and chemical properties may be attained by the introduction of a functional group capable of photoswitching.
Among multifunctional molecules, photochromic ionophores are of particular interest for the photocontrol of complex formation, the control by light of cations transporting through membranes, and for making photocontrol sensors for extraction. On the other hand, the photochromic properties of the photoresponsive entity can be modified or extended, such as coloration, life-time of the coloured species, fatigue resistance, depending on the complexation or not of the ionophore part.
The research conducted will be: a synthesis of new crown-ether-styryl dyes and crown-ether photochromic compounds; an experimental investigation of photochromic properties; an investigation of photochromical processes in solution; an investigation of the complex function of molecules in initial states and after photo transformation; a study of formation of exited state molecules by using flash and laser; a study of dynamics of transformation of photochromic ionophores; and a molecular modeling.
