Research and development on quartz fibre calorimetry

CORDIS provides links to public deliverables and publications of HORIZON projects.

Links to deliverables and publications from FP7 projects, as well as links to some specific result types such as dataset and software, are dynamically retrieved from OpenAIRE .

Exploitable results

The project was devoted to the development of quartz fibre calorimetry. Two main subjects were covered: finding cheap radiation resistant quartz fibres with a good transmission in the UV. Heraeus made preforms that were drawn in the US with a thin cladding. The fibres were irradiated at CERN and their damages were measured. They are just as good as normal quartz fibres that cost up to 5 times more. The other point was calorimetry, which was again divided in EM and hadronic calorimetry. 7EM calorimeters were built and tested at CERN. The mechanism of shower propogation was so well understood that a Monte-Carlo program is not needed any more to characterize a calorimeter. Two hadron calorimeters were built and tested. The results are well reproduced by the Monte-Carlo. The resistance to radiation many Gigarad, the shower width is an order of magnitude smaller that with conventional calorimeters and the speed is limited only by the photo-multipliers, that is less than 20ns. Three PhD thesis have been passed in France and one in Russia. This technique is now mature and applied to: a hadron cal in NA50, and EM cal in NA52, the 2 VF cals of CMS (LHC), 8 hadron cals at RHIC (Brookhaven), and EM cal at SLAC and another at DESY.
