Objective
A numerical and experimental investigation of aerothermodynamic processes during the re-entry phase of space vehicles and space debris, including the controlled descent of re-entry-bodies and the uncontrolled fall of space debris and its clouds will be carried out.
The investigation will include the free-molecular-, the transitional- and the continuum regime of the trajectories. In the numerical part of the work direct Monte-Carlo simulation methods will be applied for the free molecular regime and Navier-Stokes-Solver methods for the continuum regime of the re-entry trajectory. For the transitional regime a mixed procedure will be developed.
Experiments will be carried out in parallel to the numerical activities in order to verify the results. The experiments will be performed in the T-313 windtunnel at Novosibirsk in Russia and in the high enthalpy windtunnel at Göttingen in Germany. The numerical calculations will be performed by the Russian and Greek participants.
The results of this investigation will be inserted into a databank-system specially developed for this scientific field.
