Formal description and representation of two classes of processing words: discursive words and verbal prefixes

Exploitable results

The programme at work deals with a series of processing words: discursive words, verbal prefixes and prepositions. It proposes a formal description and representation of syntactic, semantic and pragmatic features of processing words. According to the thesis, the characteristic of any processing word must necessarily take into account the various types of interactions of this processing word with its surroundings: the words are described as traces of underlying operations whose scope depends on the various data, giving rise to the different meanings of the word according to the context. Concerning the discursive words, each word (particle, adverb or complex phrase) is described within the framework of a dictionary article. A unitary characterisation of the word is put forward. It is meant to account for the various restrictions in the uses of the word and for the articulation between various types of variation: intonation, word order, thematic divisions, conditions of uses, meanings compatible with particular contexts. Research started on the functions of discursive words and particles based on the notions of guarantor and point of perspective on the one hand, of relevance and adequacy on the other hand. Concerning verbal prefixes, the aim of the research is to provide a comprehensive representation of such entities. Particular attention is paid to the nature of the relation between the preverb and the verbal base. The classes of verbal bases combining with each preverb are systematically studied. It happens that a large number of entities are liable to work both as a preverb and as a preposition. A study of this categorical ambivalence has been undertaken. Concerning the prepositions, defined as the X R Y-type connectors, the point is to provide unitary characterisations compatible with the values related to the various cognitive fields (time, space, figurative uses). Particular attention is given to the role of the prepositions in verbal rection.
