Environmental safety for growth and reproduction: a multinational effort

Objectif

The objective of this project is to foster existing and to promote new research on adverse environmental effects on growth and reproduction. A correlation between the dose of radioactivity received and reproductive function and spermatogenesis will be studied in men involved in the Chernobyl accident and in other men in regions with elevated levels of radioactivity. Specific clinical study areas will also be selected to allow monitoring of fertility potential, conception, childhood growth and sexual maturation. A basic research component will develop animal and human models to explain cellular and sub-cellular components of testicular changes induced by potential environmental agents. Increasing collaboration between the participating units will develop interactions conducive to developing future clinical and epidemiological protocols. These will establish the possible long-term effects of how environmental agents influence human reproduction and growth.

In the project, biomedical and clinical scientists from Copenhagen and Edinburgh, will join with those of Moscow. Up-dated training will be integrated into the programme and will provide mutually beneficial exchanges between participating groups. This will involve periods of technical training of Moscow investigators in Copenhagen and Edinburgh and organising a workshop in Moscow. Investigators from Armenia and Georgia will be included as participants in the workshop.
