Development of new types of active carbons, inorganic oxides and phosphates as selective adsorbents and carriers for catalysts, and their application in industry

Objective

The main objective of this project is to develop adsorbents and ion-exchangers on the base of activated carbons and inorganic oxides and phosphates for industrially important adsorptive and catalytic processes.

New types of activated carbons will be prepared from raw materials such as fruit shells and stones or synthetic polymers with the objective of obtaining adsorbents with a well defined porous structure for specific industrial applications (including gas separation and/or storage).

Such activated carbons will be prepared with different physical forms, mainly granulated and fibre forms. In some specific cases, the technology of production of such activated carbons will be developed and tested at pilot plant scale. Some of the carbons prepared will be used, after appropriate modification of the chemistry of their surface, as catalysts or catalyst support for metals such as platinum.

The catalysts will be characterised and tested for industrially interesting reactions of gas-phase oxidation and in the reaction of fine chemistry such as selective hydrogenation. Other materials included in the project are granulated ion exchangers based on titanium and zirconium phosphates and oxides. These will be prepared with predetermined selectivity towards certain ions. These materials, when crafted with ions of transition metals, will be tested as catalysts for reactions of selective oxidation.
