Establishing ethnic research in Russia

Objective

Establishing ethnic research in Russia comprises a set of separate but independent joint research projects with the overall aim to initiate research at the Department of Ethnology of the European University at St. Petersburg. Three research sub-projects are to be carried out within the framework of establishing ethnic research in Russia.

Firstly the Russian population which sub-project aims at compiling a directory of a new type that in a first time will contain a standard set of demographic and ethnic statistics on Russia. In a second time it will attempt to offer ethno-semiotic perspectives on the 130 ethnic groups living in Russia today.

Secondly, the survival and transformation of native languages in the Russian far north-east: the principle objective of this sub-project is to document the language change and continuity in native language communities of the north and far-east of the Russian Federation

Finally, the minority studies for development of fundamental course: the aim of the third sub-project will be to compile a bilingual reference book of Russian and English minority terminology, which can serve both as a dictionary and a basis for further language.

The three sub-projects are conducted by a consortium of senior researchers in Russia, Great Britain and Denmark. They will form a core structure to be developed further and unfolded into a fully fledged Department of Ethnology.
