Objective
Infra-red radiation of CO2 molecules plays a significant role in the physical processes in the middle and upper atmospheres: the 15 mm CO2 band is the main cooling factor of middle atmospheres; for broad layers in the atmospheres of Mars and Venus the absorption of solar radiation in near infra-red is the main heating factor. Without a fundamental study of the non-LTE formation of the infra-red CO2 radiation it is impossible to develop adequate models of the energy balance, circulation and composition of the middle and upper atmospheres. This study has special importance for the Earth's atmosphere in view of the developments of adequate models for the prediction of an anthropogenic impact on the atmosphere and for the development of the interpretation techniques for the satellite radiance measurements.
The goals of the project are: the development of new detailed non-LTE models for the formation of the infra-red CO2 band radiation in planetary atmospheres; the study of the heating and cooling rates of the middle and upper atmospheres of Earth, Mars and Venus by the near- and mid-infra-red bands of CO2; and the development of a new non-LTE interpretation technique for the high spectral resolution satellite measurements of radiance in infra-red bands of CO2 at the Earth's limb.
