The movable polarised target as a basic equipment for high energy spin physics experiments at the JINR-Dubna accelerator complex

The Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), set in Dubna (Russia), has developed and built a new 12 GeV/c accelerator with superconducting magnets (the NUCLOTRON). With, in addition, their old accelerator (the SYNCHROPHASOTRON), Dubna becomes a unique place to provide 3 -12 GeV/c high energy polarized beams, with high intensity and good polarization. To get the full benefit from this opportunity a group of 9 laboratories from 5 countries plan to install a polarized target, since many tests of fundamental laws in physics require both polarized beams and polarized targets. The use of the target on the accelerator facility will involve several times more research activity in the independent states of the NIS and the target will also be attractive for scientists from the EC and from other countries. Several years ago a polarized target was built in collaboration between Saclay and Argonne National Laboratory (USA). It was used in an experiment at the FERMILAB accelerator (Chicago). This experiment is now completed and both Saclay and Argonne laboratories, owners of specific parts of the target, have agreed to make their belongings available for other experiments. The target will be installed as a basic equipment in the beam of the SYNCHROPHASOTRON-NUCLOTRON complex in order to carry out a spin physics experimental program at Dubna. Later, this target might be installed in the beam of the 70 GeV accelerator of the Institute for High Energy Physics in Protvino (Russia). Two experiments will now be at the Dubna accelerator complex. They will use accelerated polarized deuteron and high energy polarized neutrons in conjunction with the polarized proton target. The third experiment, concerning a search for a possible strangeness of nucleons, is under discussion. The use of the target on the accelerator facility will involve several times more research activity in NIS.
