Reprocessing three-dimensional modelling and scattering studies of seismic data from the Baltic Shield

Objectif

In 1989 over 2250 km of marine seismic profiles were collected in the Gulf of Bothnia during a multinational project called BABEL. Processing and interpretation of the seismic data, collected as an integrated set of both near-vertical reflection data, similar to data used by the petroleum industry, and far-offset data, traditionally collected by academic groups, is well advanced. Most standard techniques used by seismologists in western Europe and north America have been used or tested on these very high-quality observations. It now seems an appropriate time to apply techniques that have been developed in the NIS to BABEL data in order to compare and contrast the different methods on a common data set. It should be possible to calibrate the eastern techniques, which are often new to west European scientists, and determine whether the results are consistent with those derived from application of the more traditional methods.

Specifically, Pilipenko from the Institute of Geophysics in Kiev, Ukraine, intends to use downward continuation of wavefield methods to examine more accurately the near-vertical reflections. Flüh from GEOMAR in Kiel, Germany, will compare the resulting seismic sections with those he produced using the same field observations and pre-stacking migration algorithms. Three-dimensional tomographic analysis, using all available ray-paths through the crust of the Baltic Shield that were recorded during the BABEL experiment, plus converted phases and existing velocity information will be used by Sanina from the Institute of Physics of the Earth, Moscow, Russia, to produce a consistent regional velocity model of the Shield lithosphere.

Riznichenko from the Institute of Physics of the Earth, Moscow, Russia, will use these same products to study in detail lateral correlations of individual seismic phases at a wide range of offsets in terms of coherency and scattering. Migration and lateral coherency of near-vertical reflections are topics of ongoing research at Cambridge. Three-dimensional velocity modelling and pre-stack migration are particular interests of GEOMAR.

The main result of the first year will be the collection and processing of BABEL data, involving three-dimensional tomographic inversion, downward continuation techniques and pre-stack depth migrations. Also, analysis of scattering phenomenon will be applied to seismic records and independent estimates of scattering within the Baltic Shield's crust will be prepared. All these results will be presented in an interim report. Further collection of data and interpretation of interim results is expected in the second year, with the final paper being presented at an international geophysical conference in the final year.

Programme(s)
