Objective
This research aims to produce novel high technology materials which involve co-operation between co-ordination chemists and experts specialising in the growth of amorphous solids. On the common theme of the preparation and physical study of mixed oxide materials grown by the sol-gel method, with inserted active metal complexes, the following areas are developed jointly: synthesis of new types of alkoxide precursors covalently bound to the inserted active site; isolation, ageing in solution and structure studies of bimetallic alkoxide complexes; phase diagrams; the adapted synthesis of transition metal or rare earth complexes known for their catalytic or electrooptical use; testing for reproductibility on the solid matrix; and monitoring of the sol-gel growth process (hydrolysis-condensation) from the precursor to the final hybrid oxide material by relevant physical and spectral methods to control the local structure at the active site and the macroscopic structure (thin film, aerogel, monodisperse pellets) adapted to the application of the material.
Much progress is expected on the fundamental aspects of the bimetallic or mixed alkoxides of d and f metals on their solution behaviour, their hydrolysis and condensation. As extensive experience of the original synthesis methods and structure determinations has been gained by the Russian teams, a fruitful exchange is anticipated with groups having a good knowledge of metal complex catalysts applied in homogeneous or phase transfer processes. New precursor monomers will be prepared in connection with their use in the sol-gel process. Mixed oxides with organic or complex hosts guests have electrooptical applications and can be prepared in that way.
The growth process itself, in which most of the groups have early and extensive experience, needs more systematic study in order to extend the current methods applied to simple precursors. This will permit rather more safe control of the produced solid phase to newly synthesised mixed precursors which in turn will give access to novel hybrid metallorganic-oxide materials.
