Objective Cometary surface phenomena constitute the link between the state of the coma (expanding atmosphere), which is most amenable to observation, and physical processes in the cometary interior. The project aims at an in-depth analysis of the dominant physical processes in cometary surface layers and the development of an advanced computer realisation, including multidimensional parallel algorithms. Responsibility for the computer realisation will be carried by the Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics, which has extensive experience in developing advanced numerical techniques. Computer simulations of cometary activity will be carried out as a contribution to both fundamental science and the preparatory phase for the ESA Rosetta mission.
