Objective
This resource assessment study is to be carried out by a Russian expert group of natural scientists of the Kamchatka Institute of Ecology and Nature Management, RAS, as part of the project Ethnizitätsprozesse at the Institut für Ethnologie der Freien Universität Berlin.
The objective of this study is to obtain comprehensive information on the available renewable resources within the area (traditional territory) of the Itelmen people extending over 26.800 km2 on the western coastal parts of the Kamchatka peninsula in the Koriak autonomous district of the Russian Federation. The main questions will be the assessment of their quantitative and spatial distribution and the state of the environment regarding possible contamination due to ecological damage. The expected data will be of prime concern for the health of the local population and for any planning of future development of the local economy.
The methods of research will be to analyse and evaluate new data obtained by fieldwork against the background of already existing data at the Kamchatka Institute of Ecology and Nature Management.
The results of this resource assessment study will be fully reported and. summarised in the form of an article to be published in a book on the various research results of his project Ethnizitätsprozesse and/or in a special edition on Sustainable development in the North. The results of this study, including future development perspectives, will be discussed at a symposium in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskij with participation of the various scientists working on the project and with representatives of the Itelmen community. At this symposium, the Centre d'Etudes Sibérienne in Paris, France, will present a comparative view on this issue with regard to the situation in other parts of north-east Siberia.
It is intended to extend the encouraging co-operation between Russian and west European scientists in this project to further joint projects on concrete sociocultural and ecological impact assessment studies for the Itelmen territory and for other parts of Kamchatka.
