Objective
The aim of this project is to study the long-term behaviour of radionuclides in a highly contaminated environment in the Chelyabinsk region of the southern Urals, comprising a variety of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and to assess the doses to the local populations from this contamination. The area to be investigated is situated between 55 degrees N-58 degrees N and 60 degrees E-63 degrees E and has received the major part of the radioactive contamination from the three events of significant contamination of the Urals between 1949 and 1970. Furthermore, samples of water, sediments and biota from the Techa-Iset-Tobol-Irtysh-Ob river system will be analysed on 90Sr, 137Cs, 99Tc and transuranic elements (Pu, Am).
The project should be considered in the context of dose reconstruction in the NIS. It implies environmental sampling of water, soil, sediments and biota. The samples are analysed by advanced radioanalytical techniques (EMBED Equation.2 and EMBED Equation.2 -spectrometry and low-level EMBED Equation.2 -analysis). Intercomparison exercises are carried out for quality assurance, which implies that the participating institutes will analyse the same samples for identical radionuclides and compare their results, to ensure that the analytical procedures used are adequate The data are used for estimates of environmental inventories of the various radionuclides. Training of NIS scientists in west European institutes promotes transfer of technology from West to East and vice versa hard-earned environmental experience will be communicated from the NIS to INTAS member states.
An independent western estimate of the doses to local populations in the southern Urals from the nuclear activities carried out throughout the years by MAJAK will be achieved. In addition, an estimate of the global impact of discharges to the Ob river system will become available and new knowledge about the long-term behaviour of long-lived radionuclides in the environment will be obtained.
