European marmot network: ecology and management of marmot biodiversity in Eurasia

Objective

This research network will co-ordinate research and management activities in Austria, France, Italy, and Spain and Kazakhstan, Russia, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan concerned with setting up the sustainable management of marmots. The network gathers together around 120 NIS scientists, 60 from Western European countries, and 30 American and other European researchers and managers concerned with the conservation of these mammals.

This network will co-ordinate the activities of combined research (biology, ecology, epidemiology, ethnobiology, law, socioeconomics) and management activities, such as hunting and recreative activities, on marmots in Eurasia. The network is composed of a co-ordination group, relay-group and network participants.

The financing of the project will permit the updating of the communication means of NIS laboratories, the publishing of a newsletter and the organisation of meetings (co-ordination or scientific) between west and east European scientists and wildlife managers. It will assist the teams concerned with this project improve their communication abilities and increase human contacts between the different teams working on marmot conservation.
