Objetivo
In the framework of the international project EUROPROBE, fundamental differences in lithospheric composition, thickness and age between east and west Europe will be investigated by integrating a wide range of geophysical, geochemical and petrological techniques. The dependence of the mineral assemblage, rheological properties, densities and seismic velocities of rocks on pressure and temperature and their interdependence will be used as constraints to model the lithosphere in key areas (Kola peninsula and Ukrainian shield in east Europe, Black Forest in west Europe).
Due to the different features of the lithosphere in the study areas (older, thicker, cratonic in the east; younger, thinner in the west), these investigations will lead to a better understanding of the development of the lithosphere-asthenosphere system in time. Key questions will be the actual composition of the lithosphere and the relation to its age and pressure-temperature conditions.
Besides these scientific goals, this project will: compare and homogenise data processing and interpretation techniques in east and west; develop new, especially 3-D modelling techniques; and give young scientists of the NIS the possibility of co-operating with west European colleagues. The project is seen as the start of a long-term co-operation between the participating research groups.
Expected results are new insights into the differences in lithospheric evolution and structure between east and west Europe. In this project, geophysical, geochemical and geological data will be brought together in order to make an integrated lithospheric model for Kola. This approach will then be used on other key zones of Europe, Ukrainian Shield and Black Forest, and the resulting models will be compared. Current understanding of the development of the lithosphere-asthenosphere system will be increased throughout Europe. Knowledge of methods for processing geophysical information used by east and west European geoscientists will be improved. Reprocessing very high quality seismic data - from nuclear explosions - obtained by both eastern and western systems will produce a much better understanding of the lithospheric structure of east and west Europe.
