Objectif
The objective of this project is to support partly the ongoing activities of Working Group 27 of the Baltic Marine Biologists, a co-operation of scientists studying the Baltic Sea. Working Group 27 is especially concerned with the diatom species in the Baltic Sea. Diatoms are sensitive indicators of environmental change by changes in species composition. They are, for example, used to indicate the degree of acidification in lakes, and within palaeoecology for reconstructing past environments, e.g. sea-shore displacements and climatic changes. Also in the Baltic Sea diatoms are increasingly being used in ecological studies on environmental change as concern grows about pollution of the Baltic Sea.
Working Group 27 consists of (palaeo-) ecologists and taxonomists, who are working with diatom species in the Baltic Sea, Oresund, and Kattegat. Their major aims are: intercalibration of diatom species identification during yearly workshops; documentation of the results by publishing illustrated guides, including synonyms, literature references, notes on taxonomy, life-form, size, and distribution in the Baltic Sea; creating a network of diatomists working in the Baltic Sea with emphasis on the involvement of scientists from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia and Poland.
The working group will intercalibrate the 500 most common diatom species in the Baltic Sea. Diatoms of all life forms will be included (planktonic, epiphytic, diatoms living on stone-surfaces sediment-living diatoms, and ice-living diatoms). During the project three workshops will be organised and the work will be co-ordinated by correspondence. Leading international experts will be invited to the workshops for nomenclatural advice. The workshops will be held in Parnu (Estonia), Uppsala (Sweden), and Vilnius (Lithuania), and three subsequent books with altogether 300 species will be prepared.
All co-editors will be from the NIS. They will be invited to Uppsala to take an active part in the editing process of the book, including taking light- and electron micrographs. The books will include synonyms, literature references, notes on taxonomy, ecology, life-form, size, distribution in the Baltic Sea, etc. These guides will be of use as references for species identification and intercalibration in both scientific work and monitoring programmes. The guides will also provide interesting data on the distribution of the diatom species in the Baltic Sea and adjacent (more marine) waters to the south-west of Sweden (Oresund, Kattegat), which can only be accomplished by the co-operation of scientists working in different parts of the Baltic Sea area. In each guide 100 diatom species are treated. The working group aims also to supply aid to the NIS countries in the form of literature, equipment and education in (electron) microscopy.
