Diatoms are sensitive indicators for changes in the environment. Their community composition is different when they are affected by different environmental factors. In this sense, diatoms are widely used, e.g. to describe the acidification status of lakes, or to reconstruct palaeoenvironments and pre-historical environmental changes such as shore-line displacements and climatic fluctuations. Ecological studies from the Baltic Sea diatoms are carried out in all countries around the Baltic Sea. When comparing these studies with each other there were several practical problems, which we partly have solved in this project: many of the Baltic Sea diatoms (even dominant ones) were poorly documented, and therefore the risk of wrong species identification was large, the available literature is very extensive and traditionally scientists in east and west have used their own national Flora's with in many cases different names for the same species, currently a large re-definition of diatom genera is taking place which lead to still greater confusion in species identification; in our books we give both old and new names, and scientists in the eastern countries do not have the same conditions for research as those in the western countries, especially for microphotography. It was important that diatom researchers from the countries around the Baltic Sea could gather and agree upon species identification. In 1990 a working group with members from 10 countries was established by the BMB (the Baltic Marine Biologists). In January 1998 the working group had ca. 45 members. The work done by the working group is an informational and educational project of practical nature, which is of importance both for scientific research and practical nature conservation where diatoms are used as indicators. The working group has five major goals: to intercalibrate species identification during workshops, to document the results by producing books illustrated with light- and electron micrographs; each book contains 100 species and also gives these species' distribution in the Baltic Sea area, to teach species knowledge which is important for studies on the conservation of biological diversity, to build a 'diatom network' in the Baltic sea area which may lead to further co-operation in other projects, and to help the eastern countries with literature, (electron) microscopy, consumables, etc. With the help of the contribution from INTAS we were able to include scientists from the former Soviet Union in the working group. In the period 1.12.1995- 31.12.1998 three books were published. Information on INTERNET BMB Home page Opulus Press Home page
