Objetivo

In this network 11 research teams in the NIS and 6 research teams from western Europe will combine their efforts to investigate problems in the field of non-linear and singular partial differential equations (PDEs) and their applications. The importance of this subject is evident, since in the development of modern key technologies non-linear PDEs arise naturally in almost all cases. The industrial importance of the subject is reflected both by the size of the network and by the range of fields to be covered by the research activities of the individual teams. The research ranges from pure mathematical analysis to very applied problems including, for example, fluid dynamics, materials science, phase transitions, and flows through porous media.

The theory of non-linear PDEs is under intense study in both the NIS and in western Europe, and many of the participants in the network (and not only the group leaders) are well-known international experts in their respective fields. However, in view of the known inherent mathematical difficulties in the solution of non-linear, in particular singular PDEs, combining the expertise of the participants can be expected to result in greater scientific progress than individual, or even national, efforts could provide. The co-operation within the network will be greatly facilitated by the very close contacts that exist already between several of the participating teams.
