Objective The problem of long serviceability of critical metalworks, their operating safety and reliability is closely related to materials failure resistance under required operating conditions. Modern methods of laser materials treatment can be applied both to the fabrication of heterogeneous materials and to forming additional heterogeneous zones near the crack-generation regions. The main applied tasks of the project are the definition of the optimum laser treatment parameters for various structural materials such as Fe-based alloys and aluminum alloys the formation of a modified zone to retard crack growth at static and cyclic loading and the study of the influence of laser treatment parameters such as power, surface thermocycles behaviour, beam traverse speed, and configuration of laser traces, on failure resistance of materials under static and cyclic loading. The chemical composition and microstructure of the modified zone will be optimised to block crack propagation. Kinetics of defect accumulation, and the mechanisms and main laws of the fracture process will be studied by fractographic and metallographic analysis.
