Lamps based on electric discharge plasma: efficiency improvements and production optimisation

Objective

The aim of this project is the application of mathematical modelling for optimal technology in the batch production of lighting devices. Optimisation can be achieved on the basis of numerical investigation of regimes for the maintenance of electric discharge plasma, its thermal action on construction elements, and the luminous efficiency of plasma. The physical-mathematical model of the non-equilibrium electric discharge plasma consists of the radiation transfer equation and integro-differential equations of kinetics.

The special feature of the mathematical model is the large number of elementary collisions and radiative transitions that need to be studied to determine characteristic cross-sections, oscillator strengths and transition rate coefficients. For the effective execution of numerical experiments, special software will be created. Main efforts in this project will be directed to developing and optimising production of high pressure mercury and sodium lamps in the 0.1 - 5 bar pressure range taking account of luminous efficiency, colour characteristics and pressure.
