Objective
This project deals with new trends in space programmes concerned with easy access to space for research and science applications.
The rationale is to prepare missions with a single experiment, to reduce the complexity and size of the instrumentation, and to define the mission without excessive margins. This approach justifies the use of a small space vehicle which may be launched by a small launcher or share launch operations with other missions.
The aim of this project is to define a simple and innovative space vehicle based on a standardised modular design approach, capable of fulfilling at low cost a wide scenario of mission requirements and enabling small scientific organisations to have low-cost access to space for their specialised research.
The project will define the overall configuration concept and the major components applicable to many candidate orbits. The space vehicle will make use of a limited number of parts with an innovative concept of redundancy by functions, and with the adoption of a central intelligent unit governing the system operation at all stages, including support for system tests during the integration and pre-launch phases. Experiments to carried out are: a superconductor application to a horizon sensor; sudden warming in high atmosphere; the space dust monitoring; and the Earth radiation budget.
Co-operation between west European and NIS organisations will integrate west European space system capabilities with successful Russian technologies.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
