Objective
Cluster molecules containing three or four transition metal atoms in known geometrical arrangements will be synthesised in the solid state and in solution, using methods already developed at Norwich, Moscow and Chisinau. X-ray crystallography, infra-red and Raman spectroscopy, electronic spectroscopy and electrochemistry will be used to answer the following questions: How does the extent of electron localisation or delocalisation vary with the nature of the metal atoms, when the bridging framework is rigidly controlled? How is the coupling between different parts of the molecule affected by the extent of electronic interaction? And, is there a relationship between the extent of localisation/delocalisation and the rapidity with which the molecule can exchange electrons with other molecules in solution?
These questions are fundamental to understanding the fluxional behaviour of the mixed-valence molecule and the properties of the bulk material; and to the ability to design molecules with desired oxidation-reduction properties for use as catalysts in industrial processes.
