INTAS space research laboratory at IKI in Moscow

Objective

The main goal of this project is to set up an INTAS-funded space research laboratory in Moscow, with provision to support Russian space scientists at IKI, who are involved in collaborative space plasma physics projects with INTAS countries in space missions such as INTERBALL and Mars-94.

The location of the laboratory will be at IKI in Moscow, manned by one secretary, 5 scientists and 5 graduate students. The scientists and the graduate students may be taken from the existing staff at IKI. A joint committee will select the candidates for stipends, amounting to 200 ECU per month for scientists and 100 ECU per month for graduate students, to help IKI maintain its staff in space plasma physics.

In the first experiment the efficiency of the photo-electron yield will be optimised and in a second experiment plasma excitation will be produced and harmonic generation measured. These two experiments need different experimental set-ups (different sources and detection systems). Moreover theory of laser/metal interaction in the femtosecond regime in view of modelling experiments of objectives one and two (yield of photon emission and harmonic content) will be develloped. The UV spectrum will therefore be analysised.
