Advanced mobile robots for specific and difficult environments

The INTAS project « Advanced Mobile Robots for Specific and Difficult Environments » (MORES, INTAS 94-2666) has covered four important subjects: 1. The design of mechanisms that are specifically suited to operate in a given environment or for a given task, e.g. wall-climbing machines, legged locomotion for very uneven terrain or highly encumbered environments. 2. Perception and modelling of 3D environments. The research has been carried on taking into account that perception and modelling are task-dependant: it must be tailored to whether that perception is aiming at the objective task or at the motion task of the robot, on one hand, and whether one considers the planning or the execution of these tasks, on the other hand. 3. A significant level of on-board autonomy has been implemented, allowing the machine to adjust to the conditions which occur when executing the task in the real world 4. An advanced programming environment that combines with on-board decisional autonomy, to implement the concepts of task-level teleprogramming and advanced man-machine interfaces.UL> Design and control of mechanisms, with application to walking robots. Design of special mechanisms, especially wall-climbing robots. Perception and modelling of 3D environments, especially outdoor and unstructured environments. The MORES project was carried out by 7 non-FSU laboratories, most of the activity being centred around 3 French laboratories, Laboratoire d'Analyse et d'Architecture des Systèmes, LAAS, Toulouse, Laboratoire d'Automatique de Nantes, Laboratoire de Robotique de Paris, and by 4 FSU laboratories from Russia, Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics, KIAM, Moscow, Institute of Mechanics, IM-MSU, Moscow, Institute, for Problems in Mechanics, IPM, Moscow, Institute of System Analysis, ISA, Moscow. An important point to stress is that, in addition to the research work as such, several scientists from Russia spent significant amounts of time, several months in general, visiting western laboratories, in particular LAAS, LAN, and LRP. Finally, we must point out that the MORES project took place in the wake of very large research programs in the domain of mobile robots for difficult environments, IARES, and Concordia. Consequently, MORES also had links with important areas such as planet exploration and Antarctica exploration.
