Substorm-associated ULF waves and the diagnostics of global ionosphere-magnetosphere coupling and dynamics

Objetivo

The physical mechanisms of energy and mass transfer between the ionosphere and magnetosphere during substorms is one of the most important and difficult problems in near-Earth space physics. It has been shown, also by the scientists participating in the project, that the geomagnetic pulsations associated with substorms influence the ionosphere-magnetosphere coupling and carry useful information about the state and dynamics of the magnetosphere and ionosphere.

The main goal of this joint research is to search for the physical mechanisms of non-linear magnetosphere-ionosphere interaction by taking into account the substorm-associated geomagnetic pulsations and to test the models using the extended network of magnetometers in the Scandinavian, Finnish and Russian areas as well as the EISCAT systems and Cluster satellite measurements. The method of ground-based hydromagnetic diagnostics for magnetospheric and ionospheric processes during substorms will be published.
