Application of frequency-tunable microwave sources for plasma heating and diagnostics

Exploitable results

The following aspects of frequency-tuneable microwave sources and their application for plasma heating and diagnostics were studied. A general theory for determining the spectral line of gyrotrons has been developed. It has been demonstrated that it is feasible to construct gyrotrons which operate in the frequency range 140-170 Ghz and have the linewidth as narrow as needed to detect a signal which is Doppler-shifted from the carrier frequency by 1 Mhz or more. Just as this frequency range is of interest for ion temperature measurements in large-scale fusion machines by means of the Collective Thompson Scattering (CTS). It has been shown that in high-power and high-frequency coaxial gyrotrons it is possible to fine-tune continuously the frequency by mechanically moving the insert in the axial direction. It has been analysed how frequency tuning of a microwave source can provide an alternative way (to the launching angle adjustment) to control and adjust the power deposition profile in the plasma beneficial for discharge stabilisation and for heating and current drive efficiency optimisation. Mechanically frequency tuneable gyrotron at 35 Ghz and 65 Ghz have been designed, built and tested. Theoretical and experimental possibilities to expand the frequency tuning band of a gyrotron with coupled cavities have been performed. It has been shown that the complex eikonal technique provides correct description of the diffraction effects in the propagation of Gaussian wave beams in the inhomogeneous plasma. Codes have been developed for calculations of the cross sections for the CTS. Broad specifications of suitable microwave sources for CTS on ITER and W7-AS were identified.
