Objective
All the members of this project are working on the evolutionary biology of birds. For common investigation three species have been chosen: Parus major, Sylvia communis, and Luscinia svecica. All of them have vast distribution areas extending over different biomes in the Palaearctic and some subspecies forms. Using these three species as models, it is intended to create an integrated method for researching the intraspecific structures of bird species. This method will involve the comparative analysis of intraspecific variability using: experimental investigation of migratory behaviour; experimental investigation of annual cycle structure; and molecular genetics investigations by amplification and direct sequencing of variable regions of mitochondrial DNA.
The fundamental purpose of this project is to reveal the intraspecific phylogeographic structure based on ecological, behavioural and genetic characteristics, and to deduce the evolutionary trends which have allowed birds to survive through the changing Pleistocene climates.
