Extension of the European Pollen Database (EPD) network to the NIS in the frame of global change studies and acquisition of new palaeoenvironmental data

Objective

Pollen analysis and the related scientific approaches constitute one of the most reliable means to estimate natural or man-induced global changes on the continent. The European Pollen Database has been launched, which aims to collate all European Quaternary pollen data to give palynologists a tool for the reconstruction and mapping (geographical information systems) of vegetational dynamics, human impact and climate changes over the last 140,000 years. This project has been recently extended to six central European countries. The aim of this project is to integrate into the existing network several teams from the NIS and thereby cover a greater part of the continent.

The project is divided into two sub-projects which will compile existing data and promote the acquisition of new pollen macro-fossils and tree-ring data to cover all the Eurasian continent and a large spectrum of time-scales. In particular, the last millennia will be covered by high resolution pollen data and the rest of the studied period by lower resolution pollen, sedimentological and macro-fossil data.

This approach, which should lead to enlarged multidisciplinary studies, will enable the establishment of palaeoenvironmental transects, climatic reconstructions and mapping of the terrestrial vegetation in connection with other projects.

This network project, which involves a modern exploitation of palaeoecological data already available in the NIS and the acquisition of new high resolution data, will constitute a step towards the integration of teams from the NIS in international programmes and projects relevant to the IGBP domain and to palaeoecological and palaeoclimatological projects. This connection will lead to a better understanding of continental climate variations in Europe during the last climatic cycle with a special focus on the last 15,000 years and will provide information to vegetation and climate modellers.

The data compiled in the EPD will be open to a public access. The results of compilation and original data acquisitions will be the basis of a series of joint papers on vegetation history, climatic changes and human impact in the NIS. They will be included in the larger project of a global palaeovegetation mapping.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
