Objective
As the ethnic and cultural map of modern Europe starts taking shape in the Late Antiquity, the Pontic region emerges as one of the main poles of this process. It becomes the point of departure for the major third- and fourth-century migrations of the Goths, the Huns, and the Alans which mark the end of Antiquity and the beginning of the Middle Ages.
The main research topics of this project will be: the Pontic region on the eve of the Gothic invasion, that is, at the end of the second century and the first half of the third century, will be investigated with regard to the Cimmerian Bosphorus and the Greek cities, to the Alano-Sarmatians, to the Dacians and to the military and political presence of Rome.
The invasions of the third century and the collapse of the Roman defences on the Pontus will be examined with regard to the arrival of the Goths and its consequences, to the military activity of the Alans, to the crisis of the Bosphorian Kingdom, to the destruction of the Greek cities of the north-western Pontus, to the formation of the Tcherniakhov culture, and to the relations between Sarmatia and Germania.
The new start under the Tetrarchy and the re-establishment of the Roman defensive system on the Pontus will be investigated with regard to the political and cultural influence of the Goths and the romanization of the Tcherniakhov culture, the reintegration of the Bosphorian Kingdom in the orbit of the Roman policy, to Rome and the Alano-Sarmatians in the fourth century, to the arrival of the Huns and the new ethno-political structure of the northern Black Sea region.
The results of the research will be published in a monograph.
