Objective
High magnetic fields have become a very effective tool in studying the physical properties of a large variety of materials. The celebrated quantum Hall effect, discovered in the high-magnetic field laboratory at Grenoble, (which is one of the partners of the proposed project), stimulated fast growing progress in physics of low-dimensional systems in high-magnetic fields. High-Tc superconductors are another example of a low-dimensional system with a rich variety of magnetic properties.
This project aims at the creation of an international network between two of the NIS and two west European states, and includes the leading teams already collaborating on the subject of high-field magnetospectroscopy of low-dimensional systems.
The joint research will be focused on the following subjects: many-body effects in two-dimensional electron systems; surface structures and epitaxial instabilities of the interfaces in heterostructures and superlattices; and spin dynamics of two-dimensional spin systems.
The research will be performed on the following low-dimensional systems: heterostructures, high-Tc superconductors, and highly anisotropic normal metals and semimetals. Apart from general fundamental research, these materials form the basis for modern technology, such as high speed electronics, microwave devices, computer memory, and optronic devices.
