Implementation into the NIS countries of amorphous silicon technology for conversion of solar energy into electricity

Objective

The objective of the project is to accelerate the development of thin-film amorphous silicon technology for the clean and safe conversion of solar energy into electricity. The project will be an extension of existing co-operation between a research team in Europe.

The Dutch group is a leading team experienced in the simulation of solar cell characteristics and in solar cell design optimisation and the German is a leading team in the understanding of the basic carrier transport properties of amorphous silicon thin films. The expertise of these groups will be transferred to the NIS groups respectively.

The Ukrainian group is experienced in the analysis of plasma for etching, surface treatment and thin-film deposition. The group is about to develop a novel deposition process with a two-frequency mode plasma discharge. The task of this group will be to develop this process further for intrinsic amorphous silicon thin-film deposition for application in solar cells with the novel two-frequency mode plasma discharge. In this development the expertise in construction technology of the deposition equipment of the Russian partner will be used. The benefit to this group from the project will be a better understanding of the properties of amorphous silicon thin films and the ability to fabricate improved films for photovoltaic application.

The Russian group is experienced in the design and construction of equipment for amorphous silicon thin-film deposition technology. The task of this group will be to compare several deposition methods, including electron cyclotron resonance, plasma stream chemical vapour deposition (CVD) at a microwave frequency, radio frequency, plasma enhanced CVD and magnetron sputtering of a solid target in a hydrogen environment. The best method from the point of view of the deposited film's quality, productivity and environmental safety will then be chosen. The layers to be fabricated in their equipment have pre-described optical and electronic properties for optimal solar cell characteristics. In this development the expertise of the Minsk group will be used to optimise the deposition process. The benefit for this group from the project will be the ability to produce complete solar cells with optimal characteristics for later industrial implementation.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
