Objective The overall objective of this project is to establish a regional data centre of the European water archive for the European territory of the NIS in order to extend and improve the hydrological data on flow regimes in the region organised by the FRIEND network (Flow Regimes from International Experimental and Network Data) and to facilitate the increased participation of NIS scientists within the research programmes of the FRIEND project. The European water archive is a hydrological database containing river flow data, instantaneous flood peak data and thematic data for over 3,000 river catchments from 19 countries in northern Europe. This archive is central to the FRIEND research programme which brings together hydrological organisations and institutions throughout Europe. Instigated in 1985, FRIEND is recognised as a major contributor to UNESCO's 4th International Hydrological Programme. An improved representation of the hydrological regime in the territory of the NIS will enable scientists within FRIEND to develop a better understanding of hydrological variability and similarity across time and space, bringing tangible benefits both to practising engineers involved with flood alleviation schemes, hydropower schemes, culvert bridge and reservoir design as well as to water resource planners concerned with the effect of river abstractions and discharges on water quality and the environment in periods of low flow and drought. The data will also be used to improve the understanding of the processes that contribute to global climate change.
