Objective
This research networking project aims to combine and co-ordinate the efforts of scientists and scholars from the various NIS countries in investigating the role of Islam as a culture and religion within various Muslim societies of the NIS during the period from the 18th to the 20th centuries. The following will be the main topics considered: Islamic reformism, modernism and political Islam; the traditional system of education and sciences and popular Islam and mystics; expansion of co-operation between researchers within the NIS and between these researchers and scholars from the European Union; the creation of a shared forum for publications by researchers from the NIS and the European Union.
It is striking, amidst all these activities, that although relations with other Muslim states are desired, the different regions are nevertheless at pains to go their separate ways and carry on autochthonous traditions which have their roots in the 18th and l9th centuries.
The results of the research will be published in two volumes.
