Objectif
A phi meson factory named DAPHNE is presently under construction at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati, LNF, sponsored by the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, INFN, of Italy. DAPHNE's main mission is the precision studies of CP violation. The study of CP violation at DAPHNE will be done with a new detector, named KLOE, built and designed by KLOE collaboration. The very innovative KLOE detector has two major components, an exceptionally fast, high resolution sampling calorimeter for detecting and measuring neutral particles, and a truly innovative, large, nearly massless drift chamber for accurate charged particle tracking with excellent momentum resolution.
The primary goal of the proposed project is to construct the tracking chamber.
The secondary objective is to develop software, which will enhance the KLOE chamber's performance by using information obtained at Novosibirsk.
The third objective is to develop tools for physics analysis. The drift chamber is a cylinder 4 m in diameter and 3.7 m in length. It is filled with 12600 almost square cells arranged in 58 circular layers.
Within the framework of the project the following tasks are included;
All equipment needed for the construction and monitoring of the drift chamber is to be prepared.
All 52,000 wires are to be strung with a uniformity in sag of 30 micrometers, the mechanical tension must be checked during stringing, and repeated thrice after. The design, construction, measurement and monitoring of the wire tension being the primary responsibility of the ITEP group.
Build the gas purification system.
Mount and test the chamber front end electronics for 12600 channels.
Develop software for monitoring the drift chamber performance and for
removing backgrounds connected with particle interaction with the drift
chamber's gas and other materials, this last being the responsibilty of the BINP group.
The physics results expected from the KLOE detector are the solutions to the CP violation puzzle. Very valuable technical experience will be gained from the construction of this most original and challenging drift chamber. Both types of results will be presented at international conferences and published in the possibility of both experienced and young Russian scientists to work in this experiment.
