Synthesis and characterization of new glasses for active and non-linear optics

Objective

The aim of the research is to develop a novel set of semiconductor-doped glasses with an increased concentration and a homogeneous size distribution of the semiconductor phase. These properties are expected to lead to enhanced optical non-linearity and active properties (gain) compared to currently available semiconductor doped glasses.
The dependence of the position of the spectral resonances on the size of semiconductor crystallites will be used to tune the regions of maximal non-linearity to specific wavelengths of special interest. Crystallites composed of different semiconductors - PbS, Cd-S-Se, CdTe, Cd-Pb-Se, etc., will be embedded in the glasses. The use of both wide-band and narrow-band semiconductors will enable us to enhance optical properties both in the visible and infra-red spectral range. The linear and non-linear optical properties of the glasses and the optical gain will be measured. 9The main research activities to be performed within the project framework are:
Study of the formation and growth of semiconductor crystallites in phosphate
glasses and the synthesis of glasses doped with an increased concentration
of the crystallites of various semiconductors.
Study of the linear optical properties, energy levels and quantum
transitions of the semiconductor crystallites.
Study of the optical non-linearity, electron trapping and gain in the
semiconductor-doped glasses.
The distribution of the activities between the project participants is planned according to the experience and laboratory facilities of the partners. All the above research objectives demand close collaboration between the partners. The project will result in the synthesis of novel optical materials with enhanced characteristics for non-linear and active optics both for the visible and infrared optical regions. Measurements of the optical non-linearity, optical gain and laser irradiation induced static changes of the material properties will be measured and compared to similar properties in conventional materials. The project will greatly strengthen the existing scientific ties between the participants and lead to active exchange of personnel and ideas between them.
