Dynamic and nonlinear transport of electrons in mesoscopic structures

Objectif

The project is devoted to the investigation of electron transport in mesoscopic structures (such as quantum point contacts, quantum wires, quantum Hall effect conductors, quantum wire field-effect transistors, quantum dots, chaotic cavities) under strong nonequilibrium conditions which appear due to applied DC or AC voltage. The dynamic and nonlinear responses are determined by the charge and current distribution inside the mesoscopic structure and hence they provide an important information about the electron behavior in the structure under investigation which can not be obtained by linear dc-measurements. The fundamental problem of the project is the investigation of the Coulomb interaction effect on phase-coherent transport.
The project aims:
to investigate both theoretically and experimentally the admittance of
mesoscopic quantum wire structure, clear up what is the effect of the
Coulomb interaction in the dynamic response (Luttinger liquid behavior,
effect of long-range self-consistent field or both), and find the conditions
under which the high-frequency current instability can appear;
to investigate the nonlinear dc transport of electrons through the quantum
channel structure, develop a theory of nonlinear transport taking into
account self-consistently the electric field of piled-up charges in the
quantum wire and at the leads under strongly nonequilibrium conditions
appearing due to applied bias voltage;
to find the conditions under which the population inversion occurs in the
quantum wire structure due to applied dc voltage;
to generalize the scattering approach to ac conductances for a wide range of
frequencies and to investigate low frequency dynamics of quantized Hall
conductors;
to develop a technology of one-dimensional channel structure on the basis of
modulation doped heterostructure AlGaAs/GaAs by using ion etching and
sequent regrowth of AlGaAs. At the end of the project it is expected to understand:
what effects are caused by the electron-electron interaction in the
frequency dependence of the admittance
if it is possible to obtain an electric amplification in a mesoscopic
quantum wire structure
what nonlinear processes and regimes are possible in phase coherent
transport in open nanostructures.

Programme(s)
