European Network : Superacide Solids - Synthesis and Investigation of Their Catalytic Properties

Objective

The goal of this project consists in the synthesis of new superacid solids based on III-IV group element oxides; investigation of their physicochemical characteristics, structural, adsorption and catalytic properties for reactions of isomerization. alkylation of hydrocarbons, particularly, the alkylation of isobutane with butenes etc, development of new approaches for the treatment of superacid activity and reaction mechanisms, taking into account the recently discovered phenomenon of oscillatory adsorption. 9The project will include the following stages: - synthesis of new superacid solids based on III-VI group element oxides; - determination of their acidic and other characteristics using modern physical and physicochemical methods; - investigation of catalytic properties of obtained superacid solids in the alkylation of isobutane with butenes using modernized stream-circular reactor, varying reaction parameters over a wide ranges and possibly running the reaction in oscillatory regime; - generalization of experimental data. As a consequence of carrying out this project a set of new superacid solids will be synthesized; new relationships between chemical composition, structure of superacid solids and their acidic properties will be obtained. Knowledge about the impact of the nature of the acid on carbonium ion reactions will be enhanced. Realization of the oscillatory regime will make it possible to reach conclusions concerning behaviour of reagents on catalyst surfaces and to determine the site of proton attack with a large excess of isobutane and, thus, will clarify the alkylation reaction mechanism. This project will stimulate synthesis of new superacid solids and make a significant contribution to this important direction of modern chemical science. Besides its scientific importance, the results will be useful for solving practical problems related to the desired reorientation of industrial processes from sulfuric and hydrofluoric acid catalysts to superacid solids.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
