Total and semi synthesis of bioactive terpenoids and steroids

Objectif

The objectives of this project are:
The search for new bio-active compounds derived from terpenoids and
steroids.
The development of new synthetic approaches towards natural polycyclic
terpenoids, their analogues, and steroids.
The application of natural abundant terpenoids and steroids for the
synthesis of optically pure bio-active natural products or chiral
intermediates.
The application of lipases for the obtention of enantiopure polycyclic
terpenoids and steroids.
Target oriented synthesis of industrially important compounds from natural
terpenoids and steroids.
The development of new isolation procedures for natural terpenoids and
steroids that occur abundantly in nature and that can serve as suitable
starting material for (industrial) target orientated syntheses.
Publication of the results of this research in international well known
chemical journals, which will focuss the attention to the use of chiral
terpenes and thus stimulate their application.

The type of research will be explorative, innovative and pre-competitive. Not many sesqui- and diterpenois and steroids are used as natural starting materials in industries. One of the reasons is that their availability in pure form in large quantities is not widespread, a second reason is that not many examples are known to illustrate their use as starting material. This project will contribute and extend these possibilities of diterpenoids and steroids significantly and makes these compounds accessible for industrial exploitation. New target oriented and explorative synthetic procedures starting from natural terpenoids and steroids will be developed. Industrially feasible isolation procedures for diterpenes and steroids from their natural biological matrices will be investigated and phytochemical research will be carried out to discover new compounds with interesting biological activity.
This project will contribute and extend the possibilities of the (industrial) use of terpenoids and steroids significantly. The terpenoids that will be investigated as chiral starting material are sclareol, larixol, labdanolic acid and related labdanes, taxanes, hebelomic acid, brassicasterol and solanidine. The target molles are drimanes, ambrox, steroid basic materials like progesterone, brassinosteroids, taxanes, gibberellines and scalaranes. The starting plant material can be produced by agriculture, it may be collected from nature or it can be a waste product from industrial processes based on natural starting materials. In this way new sources of basic materials will be made accessible that are abundantly available in nature and mostly have a good potential for the preparation of new compounds with strong physiological effects. These green agricultural natural products are a renewable source of starting materials for the production of useful products also for the industry. It is important to develop this way of thinking about agriculture and natural resources in NIS countries and stimulate industries to use these basic materials.

Programme(s)
