Objetivo
This project will provide the first detailed database on the nature and functioning of the microbial plankton (microbial loop) in high Arctic freshwater lakes. As well as tracking the abundances and succession of the microbial plankton during the annual phase of highest productivity, it will also produce a detailed taxonomic analysis of the makeup of the flagellated and ciliated protozoan plankton and their feeding and growth dynamics. Bacterial and phytoplankton productivity studies with the protozoological physiological studies, will permit us to show the magnitude of microbial participation in carbon cycling and energy flow.
Several of the partners (Laybourn-Parry, Ellis-Evans and Galchenko) have databases (much of it published)on Antarctic lake systems which can be used to make valuable comparisons between the biogeography and functional dynamics of high latitude lake systems. In addition Ellis-Evans has recently acquired data on -Arctic lake systems. High latitude lakes are delicate vulnerable ecosystems likely to suffer the impact of climate change, it is crucial that we know more about the biology of Arctic systems, which have been relatively neglected as far as microbial studies are concerned. There is evidence to show that climate change is impacting on Antarctic lakes. This project will provide the basis for further collaboration between the partners in this important research area, encompassing both the northern and southern hemispheres.
The project will involve a team expedition to the Arctic to undertake the fieldwork. This will involve the partners working together in very close collaboration. In order to facilitate the dissemination of results, a workshop is planned in the final year to discuss data, the writing of articles for publication and conference presentations.
