Study of Coherent structures in the lower atmosphere by acoustic remote sensing

Objective

The main purpose of the project is to obtain systematic data on scales, morphology, evolution and internal structure of coherent structures in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL). The novelty of this project consists in the use of a network of SODAR to visualise location, pattern and morphology of coherent structures along with quantitative measurements of vertical profiles of wind and some characteristics of turbulence. These remote acoustic measurements will be accompanied by in situ measurements on masts. Field measurements in several seasons will be carried out in Russia, using also the SODAR equipment supplied by the German team. Already existing data sets from a network of SODAR will be supplied by the Italian team to test and to improve the data interpretation schemes and to compare with new experimental data sets obtained in this project.
The following main results will be obtained
Classification of the properties, conditions of occurrence and existence of coherent structures in the ABL Description of the statistical characteristics of temperature and wind speed fields in the coherent structures (low-frequency spectra, probabilities distributions, correlation functions) Estimation of typical temporal and spatial scales of coherent structures, of the orientation of their axes and of their propagation speed and direction.
Verification of theoretical hypotheses about the properties of eddy structures in the ABL and comparison with the results of large-eddy simulations Analysis of the role of coherent structures in atmospheric exchange and diffusion and recommendations for taking into account the real flow properties in short-range dispersion models for the ABL.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
