Sorption-microflotation method for the purification of water from soluble components of fuels and oils

Objective

The aim of the proposed work is to develop a method to purify waters contaminated with water soluble components of oils and fuels. The proposed method is a combination of adsorption and microflotation processes. Water soluble components of oils and fuels will be adsorbed onto finely divided clays and clay minerals of natural origin. sequently, the particulate material (sorbent plus adsorbed components) will be eliminated from the water by microflotation. The research program comprises: Selection and preparation of finely dispersed natural clays and clay minerals sorbents. Study of their sorption characteristics and sorption kinetics towards water soluble components of oils and fuels. Study of the ways in which clay sorbents can be extracted from aqueous suspensions by microflotation. Study of the kinetics of the sorption-microflotation elimination of water soluble oils and fuels. Development of a water purification procedure for the elimination of water soluble components of oils and fuels by the sorption-microflotation method. The investigations will be both theoretical (calculation) and experimental. The microflotation processes will be modelled and then carried out with different sorbents and under varying conditions in order to optimize them. Sorption characteristics of natural sorbents will be determined and modifications of clay surfaces will be done to improve their sorptive capacity. Rheological properties of clay-pollutant-water systems will be studied along with their ability to be transported by micro-flotation mechanisms. The results will be presented as yearly reports and as scientific publications.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
