Patterns in plankton communities: Mobile fish schools as a factor of spatial structure formation

Objective

The objective of this project is to improve the understanding of irregular pattern formation mechanisms in plankton communities and to explore new strategies for control of the resourse of a body of water. Because of the role of predation - prey interactions of phytoplankton, herbivorous and fish species in carbon cycling and in temperature control and, hence, due to their strong impacts on the global climate changes a study of the complex dynamic system "nutrient - phytoplankton - zooplankton - fishis a current problem.
The specific goal is to investigate the role of mobile fish schools in the emergence and spatio-temporal dynamics of plankton structures. The investigations will concentrate on the specific features of the fish schools interaction and its impact on pattern formation processes in plankton communities. Besides, it is planned to study the role of season cyclic changes of the fish school typical size and density in formation of stationary and autowave plankton patterns. Both computer and in aquarium experiments, and also field mesurements and previous data processing will be carried out to reach the goal above.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
