Objective
The project aims at the preservation of vital water areas against pollutions, so a balanced system of express monitoring is necessary. In such areas, the pollution pattern is basically very complex: such a situation stimulates the development of complex methods (adaptation of available techniques and searching for new ones), in order to reliably detect the objects under study in their mixture.
The main objects to be monitored are: oils as films on the water surface and as dissolved-emulsified fractions in the water column, other organic contaminations, protein-like compounds, aquatic humic stances, phytoplankton (especially, its group and species composition and the photosynthetic activity). The core of this project will be a coastal lidar station for monitoring of a selected water area in a continuous regime. Within the project, a complex of fundamental and applied research will be carried out in the laboratories of participants and in the area of the Blue Bay (Gelendzhik) and the Novorossiisk seaport. The following results are expected: Determination of the most informative optical and spectral characteristics which allow to derive the concentration of different organic complexes, and to perform their identification in water. Elaboration of linear and nonlinear laser fluorescence spectro- scopy methods for direct and remote monitoring of sea water. Development of the conception, methods and tools for laser monitoring of coastal water from sea-shore lidar station and from patrol boats. Investigation and analysis of the concentration spreading of organic stances in coastal sea areas with different anthropogenic loads. Evaluation of concepts and methodology for the use of sea-shore lidar stations, and coastal areas of water as testing areas for calibration of satellite data.
Great experience of the participants on different, mutually complementary aspects of the project, modern techniques and good experimental base on the coast of the Black sea in the vicinity of the two vital sea areas, available to participants guarantee the feasibility of a successful project. A good computer equipment and well established electronic communications between the partners also facilitate the work on the project.
