Integrated methodology for the design of flexible manufacturing systems with hard and soft production lines

Objective

This project proposes an interdisciplinary approach for the conception of flexible manufacturing systems used to produce a real industrial product as well as services associated with training, teaching and research. The Industrial Engineering Department of the Universite de Technologie de Troyes is currently preparing an investment project to purchase this type of industrial system. As part of the feasibility study, various experts and centers in France and elsewhere were contacted to form the structure of this project.
Its objective is to develop an integrated methodology for the evaluation of alternative FMS designs which meet basic technical and budgetary constraints. The project is organised by work-packages which are visited by a Simulator. The work-packages produce locally optimum solutions to their particular problems in the fields of automation and robotics, command and control, plant layout and logistics as well as production and maintenance planning. The Simulator selects one among the various paths linking these work-packages, evaluates local solutions from a global perspective and returns to the individual units with a revised solution until a globally optimum solution or an acceptable level of convergence is reached.
What makes this project particularly interesting is not only the fact that these are innovative approaches in each area of expertise: it also makes major multidisciplinary international links which will help absorb the experience and the creativity of Belarussian and Russian researchers in the field of FMS conception. Although the methodology is general and applies both to miniature and industrial size FMSs, there is a high probability that the GSI-UTT FMS project will be funded in time to field-test the results of this joint effort.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
