Studies of hydrodynamic instability and transition to turbulence in boundary layers with laminar separation

Objective



The project is aimed at investigation of unsteady properties of the flow in local regions of boundary-layer separation, especially on the role of three-dimensional disturbances, large-amplitude two-dimensional disturbances, and free-stream turbulence. Separation bubbles at transitional Reynolds numbers are examined when the laminar separation is followed by development of instabilities and further transition to turbulence. The studies are designed to get new details about different aspects of the transition process in separated flows which are far from being completely understood today.
Both in controlled experiments to be performed in wind tunnels and by numerical simulations nonlinear effects at the transition, global vortex dynamics in separation regions and the influence of environmental conditions on the transition process will be emphasized. As a result, new data will be available on nonlinear interactions of disturbances in separation bubbles, elucidating contributions of different mechanisms to breakdown of the laminar flow, origination and dynamics of large scale vortices in separation regions will be clarified, and the effect of free stream turbulence level on the transition process will be made clear.
