Analysis and diagnostic techniques of radioactive contaminations of arid lands of Kazakhstan

Objective

The aim of this project is to arrive at a quantitative description of the consequences of numerous nuclear tests in Kazakhstan. Conclusions arising from this model will provide a solid foundation for making sound ecological decisions in the future. The main elements of the project are centred around the analysis and diagnostic techniques of radioactive fields of Semipalatinsk and Azgir nuclear test sites. There are numerous techniques for obtaining the radionuclides strength following a nuclear explosion. However, the spread of the contaminants depends on many factors, such as atmospheric conditions, geological character of the test site, the underground water streams network, and others. None of these can be easily controlled, due to the actions of nonlinear processes talking place in the nonhomogeneous, non-isotropic medium. The consequent spatial distribution of contaminants displays a complicated structure. Investigating the time dependence of this structure forms an integral part of this collaboration.

The following research issues will be tackled:
analysis of available radiological data through:
geometrical techniques;
statistical techniques;
nuclear physics techniques.
development of models:
reconstruction of current radiation patterns;
stochastic approach to radioactive precipitation.

The combination of theoretical models with the empirical findings forms the core of this collaboration. It is expected that the original contribution to the analysis of the complicated spatial patterns will be realised. Moreover, by studying the complex behaviour of the distribution, some practical input to the sound ecological decision-making process is envisaged

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
