Structure investigations of novel materials by the method of high resolution neutron diffraction

Objective

The objective of the project is the investigation of the structure of novel materials, such as oxyhalides and fullerens with admixtures of alkaline metals and fluorine. Oxyfluorides and fluorine-containing fullerens were synthesized and investigated for the first time by the project participants. Further advances in this direction demand using updated methods of structure determination. For these two classes of compounds the actual problem is of the role of structure peculiarities in the appearance of the unusual properties of these compounds.

The neutron diffraction method responds most adequately to the posed problem and it should be mentioned that in the present case, high resolution neutron diffraction is required. The project participants own the necessary instruments and experience to conduct this kind of research.

The directions of research are defined by the posed problem and make a closed cycle process of producing new materials. The project participants will synthesize novel materials, carry out their certification using X-ray and electron diffraction, conduct precision neutron diffraction investigations aimed at refining the structure and revealing its peculiarities, and will also elaborate recommendations for synthesizing novel materials with given properties.

Results of the investigations will be published as articles in leading scientific journals and will be reported at international conferences.
